How can you give an empty can a new shape with a lot of creativity? This question was raised for the first time ten years ago. Itβs travelled all around the world and is now returning to Austria with some of the most original answers.
Following the Wright brothers' historical photographs and well-know artists such as Panamarenko or Jos Pirker, the can is the center of attention at Salzburg's Hangar-7 from May 10 to July 3. Here it will appear in unprecedented forms: under the glass roof of the Flying Bulls' unique home, the exhibition Red Bull Can Art Worldwide is presenting 70 of the most original can creations from the Red Bull Creativity Contests which have taken place all over the world.
From Mona Lisa to Big Ben
In 1995, the first Red Bull Creativity Contest took place in Austria. From there, it then embarked upon a ten-year journey around the world: in 16 countries, including Holland, South Africa, New Zealand, Poland, Israel and America, creative spirits were asked to let themselves be inspired not just by the contents of the blue and silver can but also by the can itself. At 26 contests amateur handicraftsmen and engineers, artists and freaks transformed more than 30,000 empty cans into extraordinary art objects β some of them have even made it to the Guggenheim Museum.
In Salzburg, a Formula One racing car, Big Ben, a chessboard and the Mona Lisa β all made out of cans β will be on view.
Red Bull Can Art Worldwide can be seen daily from 9 am to 10 pm. Free admission.
