The Story
Besenyei first climbed into a glider at the age of 15. Five years later he competed in his first glider competition, taking first right away – though he was later disqualified because of a defective altimeter. Put bluntly, it has remained the only setback in Besenyei's career, which now extends about three decades. After his mandatory military service, spent in a parachuting unit, he became a test pilot with the Hungarian aviation commission – and a professional aerobatic pilot. He's still the latter today. His flying style is unmistakable. Hardly anyone rolls, dances and whirls more precisely and at the same time more poetically. Besenyei's performances are akin to concerts by virtuoso pianists: everything seems so effortless in his sovereign grip. While executing the most difficult manoeuvres, he makes it appear as if the airplane were invented for this kind of motion alone.
