The Red Bull US Grand Prix is considered the race of the year not just by US riders. Nicky Hayden is especially looking forward to the race: not only is he last year's winner, but he heads to Laguna Seca as the World MotoGP Championship leader. In an interview, the 24-year-old talks about what makes his home GP special, last year's win and what he would really like for his birthday.

On July 30th, a week after the Red Bull US Grand Prix, you will be celebrating your 25th birthday. What are you hoping for?

I don't have to think long about that one: a win in Laguna Seca would be the best present ever. It would make the break in the race schedule even more enjoyable - the next GP in the Czech Republic doesn't take place until August 20.

You seem to be quite fond of the Laguna Seca circuit.

What do you mean 'fond'? I love this circuit! And not just because I celebrated my first MotoGP win there last year.

Your moment of glory will undoubtedly remain a lasting memory...

Definitely - this win was a dream come true for me. It was overwhelming to be on the top step of the podium, watching the cheering fans and hearing them join in the national anthem.

Can you briefly sum up the Laguna Seca circuit?

It may not be the fastest circuit on the calendar, but it is unique: it's extremely demanding on the riders and punishes the slightest of errors - its many blind corners are what really make the circuit challenging.

Do you consider the Red Bull US Grand Prix a race like any other?

No, quite the contrary: it's a very special race. There'll be 50,000 fellow Americans there to cheer me on: my parents, my four siblings and many friends will also be at the race. I must admit, I'm pretty excited.

Does your excitement put you under pressure or do you feel more motivated by it?

Motivated! It's a great honour for me to be able to race in the US. Motorsport is huge in the States, all the excitement surrounding a Grand Prix is amazing. No other race is attended by so many VIPs. Where else are you likely to bump into Hollywood stars like Brad Pitt?
