Red Bull Trailfox from July 6 to 8, 2007, will see the top mountain bike freeriders on the hunt for the fastest times and the cleverest trails. But the foxes mustn't chicken out of either the group start for the Monster Trail or the unlit Night Trail if they hope to have any chance of winning.
The Trailfoxes have to be quick and cunning, diurnal and nocturnal, have a good nose and a heightened instinct for hunting: The average Red Bull Trailfox participant should have as much in common with his red-haired namesake as possible if he hopes to finish the race successfully. And not just because the course of this extraordinary bike rally runs through territory located in the middle of nowhere, namely the mountains surrounding the Prau la Selva Sport Center in Flims (Switzerland).
After Work Trail
"You've got to have style and speed," says a less poetic Janez Grasic, winner of the inaugural Red Bull Trailfox in 2003, "because only a genuinely complete rider can win." After all, the four stages, which have to be completed on the same bike within 36 hours, throw up challenges of all kinds. The event kicks off on July 6 at 8pm with the After Work Trail. The ideal line is floodlit and leads through the underbrush, over rocky terrain, bridges and drops to the finish. The Trailfoxes who take the long way around the style elements will, of course, lose valuable time.
Monster challenge and witching hour
The 300 riders pick up the challenge the following day with the Monster Trail, when the Trailfoxes will all be let out of the den - the Grauberg mountain station at an altitude of 2,200 metres - at the same time. Nothing can prepare them for the 9 kilometre downhill trail - the only chance they get to see the course in advance is by video wall the day before. The stage that follows on the same day at 10pm is no less monstrous: The 600-metre unlit Night Trail demands good lighting, keen eyes and lightning reactions.
Hip hop party on the shores of Caumasee
Stage three-point-five may not count towards the final rankings, but that doesn't make it any less demanding on the riders in terms of staying power: the Red Bull Trailfox party on the shores of Caumasee, which takes place directly after the race. Performing live on stage will be German band Dickes B!, while the evening’s line-up will be rounded off by two DJ acts, Superstar DJs and DJ Cem. The judges will be proceeding just as diligently during the fourth and final stage, which takes place on Sunday at 12 noon. The event is rounded off by the Dirt Contest, which is purely for show and doesn't count towards the final standings.
The winner, incidentally, is the Trailfox with the best average placing over the first three stages. He or she will hold the title of Red Bull Trailfox for a year - and will be 5,000 Swiss Francs better off for the privilege.
