Shaun White is arguably the best skater and snowboarder of the hour, halfpipe Olympic winner and X Games medal record-holder – and he also wants to win gold at the X Games 2007. Before the event he talked about luck, the 1080 and snowboarding in summer.
You spend your time skateboarding and snowboarding, you have three houses and several cars, your own clothing line, an Olympic gold medal and an ESPY Award. What the hell did you do in your previous life to deserve so much luck?I’m not really sure what I did in my past, but I wouldn’t say it’s all luck. Luck is finding money on the ground. Everything that’s happened to me has come from really hard work. It’s super fun hard work, but it’s not about just having been lucky. Would you call this big red hair lucky?
One of the few things that you haven’t managed to nail yet is the 1080 in skating the X Games 2005 and 2006 you got close to stomping it. Will we see the next attempt this year?
Well there’s no Best Trick at the X Games this year, so I don’t think I’ll try it. It’s too hard to just put into one of my runs. I’m sure I’ll try it again soon, but don’t know when.
Give us a few tid-bits to whet our appetite for the X Games: What do you still have up your sleeve?
Well, I have a few new tricks that I’ve been working on and really want to put in my runs for the X Games. Lets just say it has some flipping, and some spinning in it. And no one else is doing it.
Tell us a secret about the X Games that until now has been kept under wraps and was only known by initiated insiders.
Before we all go out to skate, Pam Anderson is back stage and gives us all a good luck kiss. Nah, just kidding! There aren’t really any big secrets. It’s just like any other contest, except it’s covered by a whole lot more TV cameras.
You won the first and second contests of the AST Dew Tour 2007. What’s the plan for the rest of the summer?
Well, I’m going to do some more skate contests for sure. It’s been going well so far and I want to keep it up. I’d also like to go on a fun concrete skatepark tour with some of my friends. That’ll be the best trip for skating for sure!
Any summer time snowboarding going down?
Yeah, I’m going down to Chile to shoot some catalog stuff and film for a little bit. It’ll be a fun trip with Heikki Sorsa for a week, then back to the States for more skating.
